EQCA seeks community input on a proposed ballot initiative to overturn Prop. 8

SAN FRANCISCO -- Equality California (EQCA) has put together a survey and a series of town hall meetings across the state to discuss the possibility of putting a measure on the ballot in 2012 to overturn Proposition 8. If the measure were successful, marriage equality would be restored in the state.

EQCA says that conversations have started about the possibility of taking such a measure to the ballot because of the numerous delays in the federal case against Proposition 8.

"The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that they will not permit same-sex couples to marry while we wait for the California Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals to hear and consider the case," EQCA said in a statement.

"Delays in the federal case against Prop. 8 have sparked conversations about whether we should wait for the courts to restore the freedom to marry or whether we should seek to overturn Prop. 8 through a ballot measure in November 2012."

The organization has put a call out for community members to respond to an online survey asking their opinions on a 2012 ballot initiative. The brief survey asks if people would support a ballot measure based on a variety of different conditions and if they would volunteer for such a camaign.

EQCA says that the survey is a first step in a process that will include research, conversations with coalition partners, town halls and further chances for input.

The organization has also scheduled town hall meetings in 11 cities across the state as well as an online meeting where community members will be able to provide their input about a possible ballot initiative.

A town hall meeting has been scheduled for June 3 at 6 pm in San Diego at The Center, 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest. More information is available on Facebook.

EQCA says that no decisions have been made yet about whether to pursue a ballot measure and that is why they are seeking community input.

"Please, join us and share your perspective. Help shape the decision," EQCA said.
