SAN DIEGO -- To give perspective into the LGBT pride movement and the actions that launched it, the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) will present a program called "Rediscovering Stonewall" on Tuesday, July 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
The presentation will be facilitated by activist Kelsey Hoffman, who will weave together various groups, people and actions that have taken place throughout the history of the LGBT movement including The Mattachine Society, The Daughters of Bilitis, Bayard Rustin, GetEQUAL and the Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day Parade.
SAME welcomes everyone to attend the educational presentation and encourages people to be prepared to share their own experiences.
“It comes down to a fight sometimes, without standing up for who you are, you lose a part of yourself," SAME member Sean Bohac said. "Without the queens and queers who said 'enough!' at the Stonewall Riots of 1969, the LGBT community would have no centers, no elected officials, no movement for equal protection, and no marriage equality in New York.
“We need this history to help us get where we want to go.”
Bohac and his fellow SAME members say they have also done their part to "carry the spirit of the Stonewall rebellion forward."
In 2010 the group spoke at or lead over 40 events including, a civil disobedience action on Aug. 19, in which nine people were arrested for protesting the stay on the federal court decision to restore marriage equality in California. The nine arrested are now referred to as the "Equality 9," and are petitioning the City Attorney to drop the charges against them.
Hoffman and Bohac are both part of the "Equality 9" advocates for marriage equality.
Following the presentation and discussion, SAME will carry out its regular monthly public meeting where the group will finalize its plans for this weekend's San Diego LGBT Pride Parade and other matters related to the "Equality 9."
The meeting will take place in the Canvass for a Cause Building located at 3705 10th Ave. in Hillcrest.
