Same-sex marriages put on hold in Cancun resort areas

CANCUN, Quintana Roo, Mexico – Put those wedding plans on hold in the Cancun resort area.

Days after news circulated around the world that six gay and lesbian couples were going to wed in Cancun because a loophole in the law did not prohibit same-sex marriage, Quintana Roo Secretary of State Lois Gonzalez Flores ordered a review of the legal situation, La Reforma newspaper reports.

LGBT activist Patricia Novelo with Colectivo Diversidad has said that Cancun and other resort areas on the Mexican Caribbean would become a new marriage attraction for gay and lesbian couples from the United States, Canada and Europe.

Colectivo Diversidad, Fusion G, Gaytoursmexico and the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association announced plans to market the Cancun area as a wedding destination for LGBT couples.

Currently, only the city-state of Mexico City has legalized marriage equality, while the rest of Mexico hasn’t.
