SAN DIEGO -- To celebrate the last month's announcement that all charges against the "Equality 9" have been dropped, the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) will host a Vicoty Dance on Friday, Sept. 21, at Bamboo Lounge in Hillcrest.
The Equality Nine are a group of nine activists who were arrested on Aug. 19, 2010 after staging a sit-in at the San Diego County Administration Building to express their support of marriage equality. Proposition 8 had been ruled unconstitutional on Aug. 4, 2010, and Aug. 19 was the date that marriages were supposed to resume in California, but the appeals court issued a stay to prevent that.
The group had been involved in a lengthy court battle after that, with many in the community calling for the dismissal of the charges. The group learned Aug. 24 that the case was against them was being dismissed, said Zakiya Khabir, a member of SAME.
The Victory Dance celebration will include a brief presentation, a discussion on the future of the LGBT movement, followed by a game of "Rebel Queer Bingo," and the party.
The event begins at 7 pm. Bamboo Lounge is located at 1475 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
