More than 2,000 nonprofit organizations have signed-on to participate in #GivingTuesday, hoping to start a new American tradition in the likes of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
As consumers rush to shopping malls and online merchants in the days after Thanksgiving, the 92Y Initiative is attempting to create an easy way for people to give to the charities of choice after splurging on holiday gift items. Nonprofit organizations that have registered with the campaign receive a profile on the #GivingTuesday website which share details of each organization's participation.
"We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals ... Wouldn't it be great to have a day for giving back?" wrote campaign organizers in marketing materials. The United Nations Foundation has partnered with 92Y to lend strategic and communications clout to the project.
The campaign is focusing heavily on the power of Social Media, and participating organizations are encouraged to use the hash tag #GivingTuesday to solicit support.
