SAN DIEGO, California – Who doesn’t love a yard sale? It can’t get any more fabulous unless it is one run by the LGBT community.
The annual Holiday Yard Sale, hosted by Mahogany Run Delivery and benefiting Stepping Stone of San Diego, will offer bargains galore on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22 and 23, in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego.
Items are priced 75% off their retail value. But more importantly, the Holiday Yard Sale gives everyone a chance to understand why this event is so crucial to San Diego’s LGBT community.
Our community suffers from an abundance of drug and alcohol abuse. Sometimes this illness can be made more difficult because the sufferer is dealing with issues stemming from being LGBT. Stepping Stone of San Diego concentrates its efforts on addressing this part of the community by reaching out them and offering help.
One member, who must remain anonymous, said Stepping Stone refocused the sometimes detrimental energy from the gay “scene” and replaced it with a healthy, non-judgmental and supportive environment.
“My experience,” he said, “was that I was treated as a whole person and my treatment was tailored specifically to my individual case. I was challenged and supported and my life today is happier than I can ever remember.”
The yard sale and its contributions to Stepping Stone help keep the program running for those that will need it in the future. Drug and alcohol abuse can fester for many years before an individual seeks help, such is the case with the anonymous individual.
“As a gay teen I found that the only place that I was able to find concentrations of other gay men was in the bars. My sexuality became mixed up with ‘the scene’ and I lost control of my drinking and drugs long before I ever sought help. By the time I came to Stepping Stone, I was homeless, depressed and had given up hope that things could get better.”
This individual was able to get his life back on track through the treatments at Stepping Stone, and Mahogany Run Delivery (MRD) officials said they want to make sure that others have the same opportunity.
Wayne Back, president of MRD, said his client’s expensive losses can actually benefit many others in the long run.
“We’re a furniture-delivery business, and sometimes people just discard items. We also store items for retailers and designers, and occasionally things are ordered wrong,” he said.
“A lot of our clients know that we do an annual rummage sale. We’re trying to take an asset we have and use it for a good reason. Our goal is to retire some of the company’s loss from unpaid storage bills, all while supporting worthy causes.”
Organizers of the yard sale give 20% of the proceeds to help keep Stepping Stone alive. Discounted and sometimes unused items include beds, sofas, chairs, tables, rugs, grills, exercise equipment, lamps, lighting, wall hangings, outdoor furniture, bedding, room accessories, clothing, shoes, tabletops and much more.
Jason Pagelow, administrative assistant at MRD, tells SDGLN that the benefits of the yard sale ensure help is available for those that are suffering, even if they can’t afford to get treatment.
“The sale benefits the general fund will pay for the administrative cost of running the program and the facility. Payroll, utilities, maintenance and supplies. All the need-to-haves. Stepping Stone has a very high success rate, but it is costly to run. No one is turned away because of an inability to pay,” he said.
“As such, treatment is available to anyone who is willing to do the work to change their lives. People come before money there. We do what we can to help keep them going. I believe it is very important that Stepping Stone remain available to the San Diego GBLTQI community, and continue to save the lives of people suffering from active addiction.”
The annual Holiday Yard Sale, hosted by Mahogany Run Delivery and benefiting Stepping Stone of San Diego, will be at 2221 Fern St., San Diego, CA 92104.
