This annual fundraiser helps provide people with delivered meals.
On May 12, 2017 the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine was the site of the 26th Annual Mama’s Day which raises funds for HIV/AIDS and cancer patients who get hot meals delivered to them through Mama’s Kitchen.
This year, the non-profit organization raised $178,900 for the cause and will be able to provide 56,794 households with meals.
Presented by Nordstrom and hosted by Sycuan, this annual event is always held before Mother’s Day and this year provided its signature tasting tables from some of San Diego’s most exquisite restaurants and executive chefs.
People gathered in the main room to not only mingle, but line up and taste several signature dishes from eateries that put San Diego on the map as one of the country’s top culinary destinations.
Outside in the pool area, attendees were able to sample several desserts and bid on numerous items from the silent auction tables, including trips to Disneyland, dinners and top-notch luxury items.
But this event was not just attended by people for toothsome samples and auctions.
It was also an important fundraiser for Mama’s Kitchen; a nearly three-decade old organization which helps feed those who may not have the resources to provide for themselves in San Diego County.
Alberto Cortés, executive director, of Mama’s Kitchen said this year’s event, as always, brings awareness and compassion to San Diego’s needy.
“An amazing night was had by all spotlighting our organization and mission,” said Cortés. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the volunteers, sponsors, guests, donors and Mama’s Kitchen staff for their support in fulfilling our mission of providing nutritious meals for our San Diego neighbors in need.”
Over 50 restaurants participated in the event this year, including newcomers Be Wise Ranch, Catania, Farmer’s Bottega and Leroy’s Kitchen and Lounge.
All the proceeds for this year’s event will go to Mama’s Kitchen, which supports San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

Mama's Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves.
They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide individuals with HIV/AIDS who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs.
During the past 26 years, Mama’s Kitchen has served over eight million meals and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services.
Our commitment to our clients remains unchanged and today the organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer.
