"We protest the irreversible trauma that has already been perpetrated on these children and their parents."
Thousands have already signed up to join the Families Belong Together & Free March happening on Saturday, June 23 starting at the Civic Center downtown. San Diego Pride has also said they will be a part of this rally.
Pride said in a statement on Thursday: "San Diego Pride stands with our colleagues and fellow human rights advocates at the ACLU, Florence Project, Families Belong Together, Immigration Equality, and other organizations who are working tirelessly to ensure the basic human rights of all immigrants – including and especially children who have been ripped from their parents’ arms. We know that these harsh immigration policies, such as the directive from Sessions to restrict asylum access for victims of gang and domestic violence, disproportionately affect the most marginalized among us, including LGBTQ individuals and families. When we say that families belong together, we mean ALL families."
Families Belong Together say they oppose, "the cruel, inhumane and unjustified separation of children from their parents along the U.S. border with Mexico and at other ports of entry into the U.S. We protest the conditions in which these children are kept. We protest the irreversible trauma that has already been perpetrated on these children and their parents for the crime of seeking a better life." They add that separating immigrant families and other people who are suffering from poverty and hunger is to re-violate them.
"This is violent abuse. These families are victimized again by the government to which they turn for help. Families Belong Together opposes the inhumane policies of the Trump Administration, Border Patrol, and I.C.E. and calls for immediate reform."
San Diego Pride adds that if the human rights abuses are still going on during San Diego Pride, they will raise their voices there as well.
"San Diego Pride will use our platforms at the Spirit of Stonewall Rally and the Pride Parade to decry these abuses and hold our elected and appointed officials and federal law enforcement institutions accountable."
Families Belong Together & Free March is on Saturday, June 23 from 10 am to noon at the Civic Center.
