Newsweek has just published a new story on the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people seeking asylum in the United States, and highlights an Immigration Equality client and the organization’s work to assist LGBT asylum seekers.

Further Guidance on End of HIV Ban

Until January 4, 2010, USCIS won’t deny applications based solely on HIV; after that date there will be no need for waivers and HIV will not be part of the medical exam, and there will not be refunds for waiver fees already paid.

Transgender Lives Matter, Too

Each time I heard how a brother, sister, or gender-variant sibling of mine was strangled, stabbed, tortured, thrown from a moving vehicle, beaten, run over by a car, decapitated, raped, burned, dismembered, riddled with bullets and left dead or dying I knew a part of my soul and, indeed, a part of humanity, had died with them.

It will give a total of five million dollars to charities over the next two months, all based on votes cast by the public, through a portal they have set up on Facebook. The winning recipients are based on YOUR votes, kind of like American Idol.
