(Editor's note: San Diego community activist Gloria Johnson and Hale Media publisher Johnathan Hale exchanged emails about Hale's Letter to the Community in which he opined: "Real LGBT leaders don't put politics above Pride." The letter was the most-read story on SDGLN on Thursday and stimulated much public discussion across Social Media. Johnson and Hale agreed to share their dialogue with readers about San Diego mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio's record on LGBT issues.)
Labor Unions ARE right for the LGBT community!
Carl said his primary focus isn't social issues, this does not mean he doesn't support our issues. He has a 100% positive voting record on LGBT issues that have come before him on the Council. He publicly supports marriage equality. He advocates for and has made contributions to many LGBT organizations. He is a major donor to the Hillcrest Pride Flag project. If you do not agree with his reform agenda, fine. Just don't misrepresent his record in the LGBT community.
I know that Carl has a good voting record on his City Council votes of LGBT issues. He once told me that he is pro-choice, and I remember that he has supported the annual proclamation for Women's Equality Day. I did not intend to misrepresentation him on those issues. What I am saying is that the Labor Unions are ALSO important to LGBT people. They have stood with us on many work related rights such equal pay for women.
What I am saying is that labor has fought for LGBT people on the issues that gives us, and all workers, a livable life- safe working conditions, a livable wage, healthcare and pensions . I as a retried SD County employee, I am able to have a comfortable life because of the battles that SEIU fought many years ago. I have many friends working for the city who fear for their future. I want them to have the same kind of life that I am able to enjoy because of SEIU.
I feel that Carl does not respect the city employees and does not value their work. And that makes me angry.
I respect your support of your partner. But, I will do everything possible to elect my friend, Bob Filner.
We respect your views and your many years of service to our community.
Thank you for having the class to acknowledge that you have an issue with Carl’s reform agenda and not being one to perpetuate falsehoods about his record on LGBT issues.
For that, I respect you very much.
We may disagree on some issues, but I know that we both have our community's best interest at heart.
