Ellen DeGeneres quits as "American Idol" judge

LOS ANGELES – Ellen DeGeneres is out on “American Idol.”

After just one season as a judge, DeGeneres says she is leaving. She had signed a four-year contract with Fox worth millions of dollars.

She tweeted: “Dim the lights … I’ve voted myself off American Idol.”

But some are not so sure that she left on her own accord. A few critics from the right have blamed the openly lesbian DeGeneres for a sag in the ratings.

Simon Cowell had earlier announced his departure, so with DeGeneres leaving as well, “American Idol” will undergo a major overhaul that will likely include two new judges. Who they will be – rumors include Jennifer Lopez, Sir Elton John, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson – remains a closely guarded secret.

Nigel Lithgoe (“So You Think You Can Dance”) is reportedly returning as an executive producer on “Idol,” and his Freudian slip on the dance program this week showed that “Idol” was indeed on his mind.

Lithgoe has been vocal about his desire to see a shake-up at “Idol.” It looks like his wish will come true.
