Gay comic book character Kevin Keller gets spin-off

Kevin Keller, Archie Comic’s first gay character who appears in “Veronica,” is going to get special treatment this summer.

Kevin will be featured in his own four-part spin-off series, which will be published in June.

The series will be a flashback to Kevin’s life before he became a new student at Riverdale High in “Veronica” Issue 202, according to Archie Comics.

Alex Segura of Archie News gives some perspective:

Kevin first appearance in Riverdale gave a glimpse of the town's tolerance--and how clueless Veronica could be when she set her sights on a guy -- in Veronica #202. That debut sold out quickly and earned the first reprint in Archie Comics history.

But his smashing debut left a lot of intriguing questions unanswered. Who were the mysterious Wendy and William that Kevin texted? What was his family life like? Was he always into eating contests, or is that something Jughead and the delicious food at the Choklit shop brought out of him?

The mini-series explores Kevin's life and times before his arrival in Riverdale. We learn about Kevin's travels as an Army brat with a high-ranking father and his family's acceptance of him coming out as gay. Told in flashbacks, the series shows Kevin's struggles and triumphs through middle and high school.

Archie co-CEO Jon Goldwater told New York Post that if the mini-series sells as well as expected, that Kevin Keller could become an ongoing series.

Goldwater noted that the presence of a gay character in comic books was unthinkable not that long ago.

"This is the most important book this company has released in 70 years," Goldwater said.
