SAN DIEGO -- Dance-music megastar Kristine W has seen a fair share of the limelight after spending the last decade performing all over the world and racking up 16 dance singles to hit No. 1 on Billboard's chart.
Kristine said this week that she is excited to bring her live show to the San Diego Pride Festival and entertain the masses with some of her dance tracks on Saturday, July 16.
While the bulk of her work has been in the dance world, Kristine's new album, “Straight Up With A Twist,” highlights her jazz roots and pays homage to the people who most greatly influenced her musically.
“My Mom being a professional musician, played six nights a week. I spent my childhood going to clubs and helping my Mom set up her equipment. In junior high and high school, I was so good at improvisation and performing the solos that I got all the lead vocal casting in everything and won tons of best soloist awards. I dedicated the jazz album to my high school jazz choir director Mike
Garrett and my mother,” Kristine said.
While growing up with a strong sense of jazz and improvisation, Kristine also fell head over heels in love with dance music.
“I was always into the club scene since childhood. I remember as a kid watching 'Thank God It's Friday' with my older cousins and when I heard Donna Summer sing 'Last Dance,' it was a life-changing moment. My Mom never stopped hearing about Donna Summer. She still laughs about it today. My Mom sang jazz and standards playing her 12-string guitar, which was very calm music by comparison.”
Kristine will be hitting the stage at Pride Festival this year with a bunch of her classic dance tunes as well as new gems such as "Fade" off her newest dance album "The Power of Music."
The Pride Festival this weekend will be anything but calm as Kristine performs her soulful dance tracks to get the crowds moving. Kristine is no stranger to Pride parties and LGBT causes either, even if gay fans can be a bit intimidating.
“The LGBT community has inspired me to write songs of inspiration and perseverance. I always did, but because they embraced these styles of songs and shared their stories with me many of the songs took these shapes. They are also a tough audience, very smart and know when you lip-sync, when you sing off-key, when you can't dance. You have to be on your game or you'll get clocked in a minute,” she said.
Kristine said she will be bringing her A-game to the San Diego Pride Festival at 9:15 pm Saturday at Balboa Park. If you like what you hear at Pride and are curious to hear the jazz styling of this songbird, take a little drive up north to see her at 8 pm Saturday, July 23, at Spaghettini’s in Seal Beach.
