Three LGBT movies, director win awards at San Diego Asian Film Festival

SAN DIEGO – Three LGBT films were among the award winners at the 12th San Diego Asian Film Festival.

“In The Family,” directed by Patrick Wang, was named Best Narrative Feature. The film, made in the U.S., is about a man’s battle for custody of his son after the death of his partner. Wang was selected by festival programmers to receive the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award for his stirring drama.

“The Lulu Sessions,” directed by S. Casper Wong, was given the Special Jury Award. The budding filmmaker documents her final days with an on-again, off-again lover.

“Tales Of The Waria,” directed by Kathy Huang, was named Best Feature Documentary. The American-made film tells stories of a transgender community in Indonesia and the search for love.

More than 600 movies were entered into competition for this year’s film festival, San Diego’s largest, which wrapped on Oct. 28 with more than 20,000 attendees over nine days of screenings.

This year’s audience selected the inspirational film, “The Power of Two,” as the Festival Audience Award Winner. The film, directed by Marc Smolowitz, is a feature-length documentary about twin sisters who embark on a global crusade to inspire others to save lives after their own battle with cystic fibrosis.

“As director and producer of ‘The Power of Two,’ I am tremendously honored to receive the audience award,” Smolowitz said. “Winning this award means so much to all of us involved with the film as it confirms that the film is connecting where it matters most -- among diverse audiences that are committed to high quality, high impact social issue film making. It also gives us great confidence and credibility going forward into distribution!”

In addition, festival organizers announced the other top films selected by an independent jury at the annual Gala Awards Night on Oct. 22.

The winners include:

• ostHostLifetime Achievement Award – Nancy Kwan

• Grand Jury Winner – “Surrogate Valentine,” directed by Dave Boyle

• Best Narrative Short – “Andy,” directed by Andrew Ahn

• Best Short Documentary – “Making Noise In Silence,” directed by Mina Son

• Best Animation – “Enrique Wrecks The World,” directed by David Chai
