Odd Future's Frank Ocean posted an emotional letter on Tumblr on Wednesday in which he revealed that his first love was a man. Ocean wrote in the post:
“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile."
Ocean also wrote that he "couldn't imagine keeping up my life without him," and added that he shared the story of his first love with some of the people he is closest to, including his mother. The artist ended the letter with, "I feel like a free man. If I listen closely.. I can hear the sky falling too."
Music mogul and GLAAD Media Award honoree Russell Simmons also showed his support by writing a post on Global Grind called "The Courage Of Frank Ocean Just Changed The Game!" Simmons wrote that it was a "big day for hip-hop" and said,
I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean. Your decision to go public about your sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear. These types of secrets should not matter anymore, but we know they do, and because of that I decided to write this short statement of support for one of the greatest new artists we have.
GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said, "Frank Ocean's bravery will no doubt help countless young people, who might still be struggling with their identities, realize that it's ok to be who you are."
