Fans pick new moniker for Hillcrest nightclub with no name

SAN DIEGO -- Hundreds of late-night revelers gathered at the nightclub space located at 1202 University Ave. in Hillcrest on Friday night to find out the much anticipated name for the space, which was announced as 1202.

The nightclub, which opened two weeks ago in the venue that most recently housed Eden, was purchased by DVR Intellectual Property. DVR also owns popular Hillcrest restaurant The Range Kitchen & Cocktails, which moved into the restaurant portion of the entertainment complex last weekend.

When it was announced that a nightclub would reopen in the space that had been dark for three week's since Eden's closure in July, there was much buzz throughout the community about the future plans for the space. The owners asked the local community to help with the naming process, and an online contest was managed by San Diego Gay & Lesbian News and SDPIX magazine.

Voters could choose among 11 suggested names, including: 1202, Agenda, Fizz, Forbidden, Honey, iDentity, Nectar, The Closet, There, Verboden and Whiskey Dick's, or add one of their own.

The name 1202, which refers to the street address of the space, received the most community support.

1202 will be open weekened evenings, and The Range is open seven days a week.
