Hackers posted on the Sony Music Twitter page that the pop icon had died.
With the news of pop icon George Michael passing away on Christmas Day at the age of 53, many on social media were in shock as word from Sony Music Global announced that Britney Spears had also died.
The post simply said: “RIP @britneyspears - #RIPBritney 1981-2016”
What made the announcement even more shocking was that it came from the verified account of Sony Music Global itself.
However, the company quickly amended the now deleted ominous tweet, saying that the dance diva was in fact still alive, and someone had hacked into their social media account.
“We saw a new IP logged into the account a few minutes ago and the tweet is posted by a new IP so @britneyspears is still alive #OurMine”
"I assume their account has been hacked," Adam Leber, Spears' manager told CNN. "I haven't spoken to anyone... as of yet but I am certain their account was hacked. Britney is fine and well. There have been a few Internet clowns over the years who have made similar claims about her death, but never from the official Sony Music Twitter account."
