More than just fashion statements were made at last night's Golden Globe Awards.
The Golden Globe awards was not just another night of Hollywood accolades and fashion statements Sunday evening.
Academy Award winning, and Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient, Meryl Streep, took the opportunity to make a statement of her own to the incoming Trump administration.
Deeply upset, and suffering from laryngitis, Streep stood at the podium to condemn Donald Trump and his mockery of a disabled New York Times reporter back in 2015.
“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life,” said the iconic actress.
Continuing on, having the audience’s full attention, Streep cautioned that his behavior is something that affects everyone and perpetuates more ill-will.
“Disrespect invites disrespect,” she said. “Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. Okay. Go on with that thing.”
She then called upon the media to take action, report on any injustices they see and hold the offenders accountable.
“That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our Constitution. So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood foreign press and all of us in our community, to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, because we’re going to need them going forward, and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”
She ended her speech referencing a conversation she had with Carrie Fisher.
“As my friend the dear departed Princess Leia said to me once, ‘Take your broken heart, make it into art.’
She walked off the stage to a standing ovation, but Donald Trump was not so moved by her words, tweeting a response to her expression.
“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a...Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him.......‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
Contrary to Trump's criticism, Streep is one of the most well-respected actresses working in the business. Throughout her decades-long career, she has been nominated for 30 Golden Globe Awards and 19 Academy Awards, making her the only actor in history to receive such adulation.
