Politicos from both sides of the fence are not happy with the image.
In what followers may have thought was going to be another pitch from comedian Kathy Griffin about her new product endorsement, the “Squatty Potty” turned out to be something quite disturbing, and it appears many others were equally as shocked.
Today the red-haired comedian released a photograph of herself clad in a conservative blue blouse holding the decapitated and bloodied head of President Donald Trump.
In her Facebook post she writes that this is her “artsy fartsy” statement about a guy who mocks “everybody (well, not the Russians so much).”
She also wrote a disclaimer saying, “OBVIOUSLY...I do not condone or encourage any of my fans / followers or ANYONE to cause harm to ANYONE. Verbally or otherwise.”
But that didn’t stop social media from both sides of political fence posting a hotbed of criticisms at the image and video.
“I truly believe that she thought this would probably be well received by the left.....I hope WE prove her wrong. I like Kathy, I'm not a huge fan but at times I've enjoyed her. We have enough hateful rhetoric in the aftermath of the election.....this act only escalates hate when we desperately need those with a platform to act responsibly. If it only reflected on her that would be one thing however now everyone associated with her and "the left" will be crucified.” Debbie Bosworth – Facebook
“You have always been one of my favorite comedians,I watched every show you were ever in. What you just did is NOT in any way funny or amusing, and you have lost MANY of your loyal fans. I am ashamed for you.I too am done with you.” Merri Snyder – Facebook
“Kathy Griffin is a comedienne who always try to push the envelope. I oppose President Trump and his actions. I think this was a terribly misguided protest. Kathy not only pushed the envelope but she tore it up. I do not like this or approve of it. The horrible things I have seen about President Obama seemed to fly under the radar, though. Thank God we live in a country free speech.” Jim Deery – Facebook
“So sad to look this picture and remember the real soldiers and innocent that were beheaded . This is not a joke about trump this is a making funny of the people that had their head behead . Bad taste.” - Denyse Gentil Christiansen- Facebook.
The photographer who took the pictures, Tyler Shields, defended himself in an interview with BuzzFeed today.
“Trump is the social media president," Shields said. "He is the most polarizing president we've ever had. With any type of person like that, art is going to be made about them."
"I like to make things and let people make up their own minds about it, but I understand with this that some people will praise it and some people will absolutely hate it.”
Shields said that he called Griffin warning her that the photos would be leaked and she should be ready for the ensuing criticisms.
She told him, “I was born ready.”
In a video about the photo session Griffin seemed unapologetic to making statements through art, "Tyler and I are not afraid to do images that make noise."
