The show is set to premiere its second season this Friday with a gay coming out arc.
You knew it was only a matter of time before “family-friendly” organization and the purveyors of censorship One Million Moms (1MM) would have a melt-down over the recent decision by Disney Channel to include a coming-out story arc in their popular tween kids show “Andi Mack.”
The protest comes in the form of an online petition which appeals to the programming giant to immediately pull the show from the airwaves or else lose an entire demographic of people who, “will not support Disney unless they produce family-friendly entertainment.”
This finger-waving comes a day after the media picked up on the coming-out storyline of one "Andi Mack's" characters ahead of its season two premiere at the "House of Mouse" Friday.
“By choosing to abandon family-friendly entertainment, Disney’s inexplicable choice to move toward more “adult” fare may ultimately prove to be a huge mistake,” reads a portion of the boycott.
They also respond to a quote from series creator Terri Minsky who said the reason she wrote the storyline is because, ““[The network] asked me for something different. They wanted to attract an older audience.”
To which the 1MM responds, “Why? What is wrong with having family-friendly content that is acceptable for all ages or even leaving a couple of networks solely for children’s entertainment? Disney Channel is gradually becoming another Freeform Network. As one of only a few channels catering to children, it cannot possibly be that Disney Channel has a financial need for more adult viewers.”
Contrary to their numerical claim, the petition doesn't seem to be gaining the support of 1MM members, only 6,940 people have signed it thus far.
