The veteran actor appeared in many movie and TV roles.
Actor John Mahoney probably best known in mainstream entertainment as the dad in the sitcom “Frasier” has passed away at the age of 77 according to ABC.
Mahoney served in that role for all of its 11 seasons, portraying an ex-police officer often disturbed by the gentleness of his younger son Niles played by David Hyde Pierce.
The actor surprised audiences when he took the less-macho role of a West Hollywood gay man named Jack in the 2000 dramedy “The Broken Hearts Club.”
That film also starred Dean Cain, Timothy Olyphant and Zach Braff in gay roles.
Mahoney was in hospice care at the time of his death according to reports.
The actor was nominated for many awards during his career including two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Mahoney appeared in many movies and television shows throughout his career and recently made an appearance in “Hot in Cleveland” opposite Betty White.
