The season 10 queen talks to us about her time on the show.
It's getting down to the nitty-gritty on Drag Race season 10, and last week's episode may have been the grittiest one yet. Not only was the library open for the "Reading is Fundamental" challenge, but it was also the week of Snatch Game. And in the middle of it all, tension between Monique Heart and The Vixen brewed backstage during "Untucked."
During judging Mama Ru sent her to the bottom two saying, "Your auntie Maxine hit some rough waters," referring to Monique's "Snatch Game" character; the iconic United States Representative..
To top it all off, during the Lip sync challenge between Monique and The Vixen, Monique didn't know the words, had a wigrobe malfunction and failed at a gymnastics stunt.
On the positive side, Monique triumphed in a mini challenge during the season and only appeared in the bottom two once. Sadly that performance earned her a one-way ticket to sashay away by Mama Ru. But, Monique took some time out of her busy schedule to talk to us about the show and what's next for her.
San Diego Gay and Lesbian News: Hi Monique, How are you?
Monique: Just taking it one day at a time.
How does it feel to be a part of the historic Drag Race season 10?
It was destiny!
I love your drag name. Where did you come up with it?
Monique Heart came up at a bar. My friends didn’t like my original name, and we were like 'OK let’s go with Monique,' and Heart because I treat people well and try to see the light in everything.
Who were you most surprised to see coming into the Werk Room this year?
I didn’t know any of them besides Asia.
That was a tough character for Snatch Game. If you could change it, would you still do Maxine Waters? What did you think of the fight between Eureka and The Vixen?
Now knowing what I should have done, I’d still have done Maxine Waters. I think that the drama between The Vixen and Eureka… It happened, I don’t know!
Do you have a boyfriend?
I’m single and I’m happy just being single at this point. Especially with this newfound fame, you don’t want to just jump into any sort of situation.
What criticism from the judges do you not agree with?
RuPaul told me to step my pussy up. Lies!
How did it feel to meet the celebrity judges?
I really didn’t care that much. I didn’t know who most of them were except for Tisha Campbell-Martin. I don’t really pay attention to celebrities honestly.
Of all the queens this year, who makes you gag the most?
Aquaria! Only because I don’t know anyone else who’s 21 years old and doing what she’s doing. She’s stunning.
That lip sync challenge was tough, what happened?
I just didn’t know the words. I didn’t know the song and wasn’t able to learn the lyrics fast enough.
What are you working on now?
Trying to get to daytime television. Working on my one-woman show. And music, I want to be at the Grammy’s by 2020.
When can we see you in San Diego next?
As soon as you book me!
