Today there are such great advancements in hair restoration that anyone can make an appointment on Friday, go back to work on Monday and then hop in the pool the following Saturday.

Beyond what you would typically think about hair restoration; wanting to look younger --  these procedures can also help people during one of the most important events of their life.

“If someone is transitioning, we can take a male hairline and make it female,” said Jeri Savarese at the Powell Medical Hair Restoration office. But more on that later.

Powell Medical Hair Restoration in San Diego uses the latest hair loss treatment techniques and the most innovative technologies.

Dr. Carl A Powell is a surgeon who specializes in hair transplant, cosmetic and laser treatments. He's a native Californian and a Navy veteran who served his country for 31 years before attending college at the United States Naval Academy

For over a decade, Dr. Powell has been dedicated to helping people with hair restoration. Giving over a thousand of his patients a new lease on life, and that often means a renewed sense of confidence.

Jeri Savarese is the Patient Coordinator at Powell Medical and she talked to San Diego Gay and Lesbian News about how new techniques and procedures are helping men and women all across San Diego look and feel younger with as little pain as possible.

Roughly 50% of children with a balding parent of either sex will inherit the dominant baldness gene and eventually display similar characteristics, according to Dr. Powell.

If you are not sure whether or not you will experience baldness in life, family photos may give you a clue.

Even if you do find that you may lose your hair, there is good news and it comes in the form of new technologies and medical advancements, Dr. Powell has studied them all and they are relatively painless and virtually undetectable.

“We have a lot of patients whose wives don’t even know they're coming in and getting a hair transplant,” said Jeri. “It could be the crown it could be the eyebrows it could be the mustache or beard.”

But what exactly has changed in follicular medical science? Jeri says there are two different ways of approaching the transplant depending on what makes you the most comfortable.

“We take the hair out of the back,” Jeri said. “The old standard method takes a strip of tissue out: they call that the strip surgery.”

“Or there is a new way called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where we go in, we take the hair out one by one, so that way you don’t have that linear scar. You can wear your hair shorter.”

As stated earlier, Dr. Powell serves the trans community. His knowledge and experience are a miracle to people who want to feel more like themselves on the outside.

"We do we have a lot of male patients who are transgender that have male pattern baldness, but they want to feminize their hairline."

She explains men’s hairline is typically further back and recessed, where women’s is further forward and more of a circle shape or heart shape.

“Also too for the women who are transitioning to men,” she adds, “if they want more facial hair we can still transplant the hair from the back of the head, we can give them a thicker mustache, we can fill in their beard.”

What is even more amazing about this process is the turnaround time. It would be silly to expect a full mane the day after the surgery, but the timeframe for results is a lot shorter than you might think.

“It’s a one-day procedure,” said Jeri. “When we transplant the hair, it actually takes about six months to start growing. Which is also a really good thing because people don’t know that you’ve had something done.”

Cost-wise, the initial visit is free. Once you speak with a consultant and he goes over all of your wants and basic concerns you can move forward with booking the appointment.

“It’s an all-day procedure,” says Jeri. “We’re moving thousands of hairs at one time. So it’s about six to eight hours. We do give you anesthesia we do give you a sedative, but you’re not complete under.

“We feed you lunch, you can watch movies. We make it as comfortable as possible.”

And that’s it Jeri says. You will need to come back in about a week later and then six months after that.

Dr. Powell is not only one of the best in his field, he is also very understanding of what people need and helps not only those men and women who want to look and feel better, but he's also on top of the latest technologies and procedures to make that happen.

Jeri may sum up what Dr. Powell and his staff can do for you with this final thought:

“We can take that hair and put it in your arm and it would grow,” she laughs.
