Openly gay rower Robbie Manson has won the male athlete of the year award from the Association of National Olympic Committees in Prague.

The award honors male and female athletes from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania reports OutSports. The honor also went to female rugby player Sarah Goss.

With two gold medals and a world record, Manson is honored to be recognized for his sportsmanship.

"That was amazing, it was a real high for me," Manson said of the world record. "I'm back into training now for summer races [it’s spring now in the Southern Hemisphere] and national champs then working towards world champs next year with big goal of Tokyo 2020."

Manson felt better after coming out publicly in 2014. He competed in the 2016 Rio Games, saying he felt like a better athlete because he no longer had to hide who he is.
