Meg Whitman is against gay marriage, but for civil unions

Former eBay boss seeks GOP gubernatorial nomination

GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has finally weighed in on her stances on gay-rights issues.

Whitman says gays and lesbians should not be allowed to marry, because she believes the term “marriage” should be applied only to unions between a man and a woman.

Yet, Whitman says she is in favor of granting equal rights to gays and lesbians via civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Whitman says gays and lesbians should be allowed to adopt children because, as she told the San Jose Mercury News, “many kids need a great home.”

The former eBay boss faces a challenge in the Republican primary from state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. Jerry Brown, a former governor, is the leading Democratic candidate.
