BEL AIR, Md. – The Harford County school board is coming under heat this week from some parents because it has unblocked several websites that offer information about LGBT issues.
Some parents in the Baltimore-area community complained that they should have the right to decide whether websites such as the Human Rights Campaign is appropriate for students.
The school board’s attorney said that the trustees were simply abiding by state laws.
“Categorically blocking LGBT websites was in violation of those specific regulations or statutes,” said the attorney, Patrick Spicer, as reported by abc2news.com.
Opponents of the decision said they had amassed almost 700 signatures from folks who want the school board to let parents vote on the matter.
Supporters of the board also spoke out.
“It's hard to live in diversity but that's what our nation embraces; it takes fortitude of freedom and respect for all,” said the Rev. Lisa Ward of Havre de Grace.
