WASHINGTON – Rep. Barney Frank will marry his longtime partner Jim Ready, says a report on New England Cable News.
The network says that the marriage has been confirmed by Frank’s congressional office.
The 71-year-old congressman will marry Ready at ceremony in Massachusetts with no date set at this time. Massachusetts was one of the first states in the nation to permit same-sex couples to marry.
Frank, who served in the Massachusetts State House for eight years before winning his congressional seat, has held his office since 1980. The congressman represents the Fourth Congressional District of Massachusetts.
The Democratic congressman announced late last year that he would not seek re-election in 2012 and retire.
News of Frank’s marriage, which first appeared on Twitter around 8:30 this morning, has started to circulate around the popular social networking site, with many citizens, groups, and news sources spreading the word and extending their congratulations.
Frank is part of a small group of openly gay members of Congress, which includes Reps. Jared Polis, David Cicilline, and Tammy Baldwin.
