Final work begins today on Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO – Workers today began drilling a big hole for the flagpole that will fly the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

The flagpole will be located on the median at Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest.

Organizers told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News today that the flag will be flying in time for San Diego Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, July 20.

The San Diego City Council approved the flag project was approved on May 15 following several months of applications procedures required by the city approval process. Presentations were made to community groups, including the Hillcrest Town Council, Uptown Planners and the City of San Diego's Planning Commission.

The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) led the project, and agreed to be responsible for the construction. San Diego Pride stepped up to the plate, promising to take care of the maintenance and upkeep of the flagpole and giant rainbow flag. The project is being funded completely by private donations, some of which was raised via the Amazing High Heel Race fundraiser.
