30 animals seized from Lemon Grove pet store

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement served a search warrant at Dave’s Family Feed Store in Lemon Grove on Wednesday after receiving complaints that the store had allegedly closed for business and several animals were left inside.

More than 30 animals were seized from Dave’s Family Feed Store, 16 birds, 11 chickens, rodents, reptiles and a python snake. The animals will receive full veterinary exams and care at the San Diego Humane Society, and will remain in its care until the case is reviewed for possible prosecution.

“During the search we found half a dozen dead animals. The other animals were housed in unhealthy conditions and often left without water,” said Randy Lawrence, director of Humane Law Enforcement at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. “Our Humane Officers will review the evidence collected during the search and file charges, which could potentially include California Health and Safety Code violations and potential animal cruelty and neglect.”

"It is our mission and our obligation to rescue animals from abusive or neglectful situations, and then rehabilitate and rehome them,” said Gary Weitzman, DVM, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. “When the animals become victims, they are unable to defend themselves. That's why our Humane Officers are in the field seven days/week investigating claims of animal cruelty and neglect.”

Because this is an active investigation, the name of the store’s owner is being withheld pending possible charges. None of the animals are available for adoption at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.
