SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting DUI and drivers license checkpoints at undisclosed locations within San Diego city limits over the holiday weekend. The first will occur Saturday, Dec. 29 and the second, Monday, Dec. 31.
“DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” Christopher Murphy, director of traffic safety, said in a released statement. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities, San Diego needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”
The Hillcrest and North Park area has been named the third highest area for DUI arrests, following Pacific Beach and Downtown.
Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by approximately 20 percent when "well-publicized checkpoints" occur regularly, the statement reads. The two checkpoints will be from 9 pm to 3:30 am.
