San Diego LGBT leaders to test electric vehicles at green event

SAN DIEGO, California -- More than 100 local LGBT leaders are expected to attend a "green event" today to celebrate a growing marketplace for electric vehicles (EV).

CalETC, in conjunction with the Greater San Diego Business Association, Equality Professionals Network and CleanTECH San Diego, is hosting a VIP “Drive Your Values” event for San Diego's LGBT business and community leaders to raise awareness about the numerous health and economic benefits of the EV marketplace.

CalETC, short for the California Electric Transportation Coalition, will also present its inaugural Drive Electric Green Megaphone Award for State Leadership to California Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), who will deliver a keynote address after being introduced by former state Sen. Christine Kehoe.

San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria will be presented with the Drive Electric Green Megaphone Award for Local Leadership.

"We're so pleased to be able to partner with San Diego's remarkable LGBT leadership to help raise awareness about the numerous health and economic benefits of a growing electric vehicle (EV) marketplace while show how fun EVs are to drive," said Eileen Wenger Tutt, executive director of CalETC.

Attendees will have the opportunity to test-drive a wide variety of electric vehicles at the event, including the Cadillac ELR, Chevy Volt, GM Spark, Nissan Leaf, Fiat 500e, Toyota RAV 4 and the Plug-in Prius.

The event is sponsored by San Diego Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Pacific Gas & Electric and the car companies previously listed.

The San Diego Gay Men’s Choir will kick off the evening with a brief selection of “car-themed” songs. It all takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 pm Thursday, July 24, at the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center, 4760 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in San Diego, CA 92117.
