Republican Rick Santorum says he believes Bruce Jenner is a woman

Republican and long-time advocate for keeping marriage between a man and a woman, Rick Santorum said on Saturday, “If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman.”

This, according to an article in BuzzFeed, is in response to a question from the digital news site about the televised Diane Sawyer interview with Bruce Jenner. In the interview Jenner came out as transgender, saying he is a woman. The former Senator gave his thoughts on the issue.

“My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are. I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior. But as far as for who they are, you have to respect everybody, and these are obviously complex issues for businesses, for society, and I think we have to look at it in a way that is compassionate and respectful of everybody,” he said.

Santorum is considering running for President again in 2016, reports BuzzFeed, who was there during his round table discussion at the South Carolina Rupublican Convention Party. The news site asked the politician about whether or not transgender men and women should be able to use the restroom of their choice.

“So these are tough issues. I haven’t got into the whole issue, and I don’t think the federal government should get into the whole issue of bathrooms. I think those are things that the business community and local agencies and organizations should deal with, he said.

Santorum has spoken out in the past about LGBT issues; his views have typically been conservative. In 2013 he made a statement about same-sex marriage that prompted an internet mockery of his name, “In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That’s not to pick on homosexuality. It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.”
