LGBT senior housing center breaks ground today

The North Park Senior Apartments ground breaking at Texas and Howard in San Diego.

Community HousingWorks (CHW) in partnership with The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) broke ground on Wednesday for an inclusive 76-unit LGBT senior apartment complex.

The $27 million project called The North Park Senior Apartments,  will be located at Texas Street and Howard Avenue in North Park and is estimated to be completed by summer of 2017.

The project will help correct the marginalization of LGBT seniors in San Diego who feel they have no inclusive options when it comes to retired living.

The project was unanimously approved back in December of 2015. Doctor Delores Jacobs, CEO of The Center said at the time the complex is a way to honor those in the LGBT community who have fought so hard to make a difference only to be left excluded or disrespected in their golden years.

“The people who will live here paved the way for younger LGBT generations,” Jacobs said in 2015, “and many of them are forced back into the closet in traditional senior communities because of a lack of acceptance. We owe this new community and more to San Diego’s LGBT seniors.”

Speaking at today’s groundbreaking are Councilmember Todd Gloria, CA Assemblymember Toni Atkins, Dr. Delores Jacobs, President of CHW Sue Reynolds and members of the LGBT senior community.

Once completed the inclusive senior housing center will join the ranks of cities such as San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles with similar projects of this kind.
