Straight ally shot protecting gay cousin

Juan Javier Cruz, 22, died while trying to protect his gay cousin reports say.

A straight ally was shot and killed as he defended his gay cousin from a gunman in Lake Worth Florida on Saturday.

Witnesses heard the shooter, Nelson Hernandez Mena, yelling homophobic and hate speech before using the firearm, the arrest report states.

Another person was also injured during the shooting.

Pedestrian on scooter hit in Hillcrest on University

In what seems to be a rash of accidents involving pedestrians in Hillcrest last week, another one was reported over the weekend, this time involving a man on an electric scooter.

In Hillcrest this afternoon a pedestrian is reportedly trapped under a car at Tenth and University Avenue.

Eyewitness Chris Sweeting tells San Diego Gay and Lesbian News a speeding green Chevy truck was traveling east on University and ran a red light. It then struck a stopped silver Nissan on its front left side waiting in the intersection.

Hit-and-run in Hillcrest leaves man with serious injuries

Hit-and-run in Hillcrest leaves a homeless man seriously injured.

Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck a man on University Avenue in Hillcrest late Thursday evening.

Law enforcement say the victim appears to be homeless and was jaywalking near Richmond Street in front of the Starbucks.

The driver fled the scene after hitting the man police say.
