San Diego Gay and Lesbian News broke the story today that 16-year veteran of The San Diego LGBT Community Center Dr. Delores Jacobs will not be renewing her contract this year and will make vacant her spot as Executive Director in June 2018.

Her time and tenure are well-respected in the community and she will leave behind a legacy of hard work and reverence as a trusted community liaison.

She has released the following statement about her departure.

As the board has already shared with you, I’ve notified them of my intention to complete the final year of my current contract, but have decided not to sign a new one.

After many conversations over the last six months, we are sharing this information publicly now to allow the board to embark on an open search and transition process. I have every confidence that the board will engage all of our stakeholders and community and move forward with a transparent, community-focused process.

I didn’t come to this decision lightly. It has been the pleasure and privilege of a lifetime to serve our community in this capacity. The past 16 years have sometimes been tumultuous, sometimes joyous, but the work has always been rewarding. I know that I am privileged beyond measure to be able to work for an organization and with a talented board and staff that make a difference every day, and that have helped move the needle further toward full equality.

During my tenure as The Center’s CEO, I became a parent for the second time, legally married my wife and became a grandparent for the first time. It’s simply time for me, and my family, to begin the next chapter.

Over the next year, while the board focuses upon the leadership selection and transition process, I will continue to focus on keeping The Center organizationally and fiscally sound. The Center has been fortunate to be the recipient of several new gifts this year and tremendous community support. The Center’s staff and I will complete unfinished projects, strengthen our internal systems and prepare for a new leader who will begin the next exciting chapter for the Center.

I appreciate the continued support of the board of directors, the staff and volunteers, our Center supporters, the community and especially my family.  But this is not the time for looking back or goodbyes. There is still much work ahead, and I intend to continue to give The Center, and our community, my best efforts until my very last day next year.
