The two LGBT organizations agree that violence is not the answer.
In the aftermath of today’s shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise (R) in Alexandria, Virginia, who is reportedly recovering this evening, San Diego LGBT Democrats and the Log Cabin Republicans have come together to make a joint statement condemning the use of violence.
Scalise along with Zack Barth, a legislative correspondent; Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods; and two Capitol Police officers were injured after a man opened fire on them as they practiced for a charity baseball game.
The alleged shooter was James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, later died from gunshots sustained from law enforcement.
San Diego Democrats and Republicans are unifying their opinions tonight and have released the following statement:
The San Diego Democrats for Equality and Log Cabin Republicans of San Diego stand together today in condemning the use of violence to make political statements.
While we do not agree on many issues; to strike violently against another in an effort to effect the political process is an affront to our democratic republic and our nation.
Our thoughts are with the families of those affected by this tragic act of violence and we join together in our best wishes for a speedy recovery for Congressman Scalise, The Capitol Police, and the Americans injured in today’s attack.
We also applaud the heroic actions of the Capitol police in ending this attack.
Moving forward, may this terrible incident inspire us to reach common ground and work together to improve our country and our relationships within our unique and amazing nation, and not allow the political dialogue to digress into an unproductive blame game.
