The news was confirmed by CNN, where Bourdain was in the middle of filming an episode of his series “Parts Unknown.” According to the publication, chef and close friend  Eric Ripert found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning apparently having died by suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller.

"His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

"Tony was an exceptional talent," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in an email to employees. "Tony will be greatly missed not only for his work but also for the passion with which he did it."

Anthony Bourdain wasn’t just known for his culinary talents. He also spoke out about social injustices in marginalized countries and advocated for safer work conditions for restaurant workers.

He inspired many people with his no-nonsense attitude and bad boy persona, he was often called the rock star of culinary arts.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened," chef and "Queer Eye" star Antoni Porowski wrote on Twitter. "RIP to a father, partner, chef, writer, and incredibly talented man. ... Prayers for his loved ones."

Bourdain had also gained a social media presence especially when it came to defending the #Metoo movement, something his girlfriend Asia Argento is deeply involved with.

"@AsiaArgento I am proud and honored to know you. You just did the hardest thing in the world," he tweeted in October.
