Start off the new year with a new piece of plastic in your wallet
The "new economy" has presented many of us with a lot of challenges this year. Dollars are being stretched in the most innovative ways.
According to the Human Right Campaign, 78 percent of LGBT people are more likely to do business with companies that are known to have gay friendly work places.
So the word "value" is about more than just money. It’s about supporting businesses that value us as a community. That‘s one reason why Diversity Platinum Rewards Card was launched last month.
Diversity Platinum Rewards Card is not a credit card; it is the first international discount program for the LGBT Community and Supporters of the LGBT Community.
"It was actually a time of thinking out of the box," said Harris, CEO and Editor in Chief for A Bear’s Life magazine and president of Diversity Platinum Rewards Inc. "Basically I had to think what would support the community, what could we do to support the charities and organizations that were feeling the brunt of the economic downturn. We wanted to reach out to the entire gay community.
"I created it as a platinum card because I feel that we have moved forward from rainbow cards and rainbow colors," he added. "I really wanted to create something that people would be proud of to take out of their wallet and show that they were a part of such an important community."
As a Diversity Platinum Card Member, you’ll receive perks and discounts from hotels, restaurants and retailers from across the U.S. and the world.
Every week they’ll be adding new participating companies to the list and so far they have well over 500 companies on board with the Diversity Platinum Rewards card and new businesses signing up every month.
Companies include Macy’s, Avis, Petco, Kimpton Hotels, Heritage Hotels and VPI Pet Insurance to name just a few of the growing number of national businesses.
"At the beginning it took a bit of time and patience to get some of these companies on board, but once we started getting major corporations larger pockets of business within communities, it just started rolling," according to Harris. "Now we’re signing on anywhere from 10 to 20 businesses a day to participate in the Diversity Platinum Rewards."
So how does this translate to the LGBT consumer here in Palm Springs?

"Really, it’s a triple win combination. The LGBT Community wins with increased buying power at discounted prices. The LGBT and LGBT friendly businesses win with increased business, and the non-profit LGBT organizations win with a portion of proceeds for every card sold."
One of non-profit organizations is The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is an organization that is determined to end suicide among LGBTQ youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources including nationwide crisis intervention lifeline, digital community and advocacy/educational programs that create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone.
"I look forward to promoting the Diversity Platinum Rewards Card and am honored having The Trevor Project as one of our sponsors." Harris said after attending the sold out Trevor Live fundraiser in Los Angeles with his Director of Inbound/Outbound Marketing, Faith Jackson.
Diversity Platinum Inc. also has sponsorship from MillerCoors In support of The Trevor Project.
"We are thrilled to have the world class business built from two highly successful, historically enduring companies as a sponsor," said Harris. "MillerCoors takes their responsibility of the inclusion of all communities and support of the Trevor Project seriously and with a deep commitment."
Membership cards that represent businesses that value our purchasing power while helping us stretch our dollar and supporting LGBT non-profits; is ingenious at best in this New Economy.
Harris added, "Over the next few weeks, stickers with the Diversity Platinum logo will be on store front windows all over the world. It’s an exciting time for us (Diversity Platinum Rewards Card) and the LGBT Community to look forward to."
If you want in on the incredible savings afforded by the Diversity Platinum Rewards Card the initiation fee is $65, with a yearly $40 renewal.
But as Marketing Director Faith Jackson points out, "With that, there is a cost but you also get a free GLAAD membership that is worth $40 right there. You spend your hard earned dollar someplace twice and basically it pays for itself for the rest of the year.
"You can use this card over and over. We encourage our members to recommend businesses they frequent to sign up. There’s a place on our website where members can give forward us their most frequented businesses so we can approach them to join the program. Our slogan is, 'Your Community, Your Card.'"
