SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gay Men's Chorus (SDGMC) will hold its next " Join the Chorus Info Night" on Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 pm.
The event will provide individuals who are interested in participating in the chorus as a singer or as a non-singing volunteer with information about the group. At the conclusion of the event, auditions for the upcoming season will be held.
The Info Night will be held at the chorus' regular rehearsal space at University Christian Church, 3900 Cleveland Ave. in Hillcrest.
Those interested in singing with the chorus will have the opportunity to meet the singers, staff and volunteers of SDGMC, hear the chorus sing, and get information about participating with the chorus. Prospective singers should fill out the SDGMC online membership application in advance of the event.
Chorus leaders note that filling out the membership application does not obligate anyone to go through audition process, but gives them an idea of how many people to expect at the event as food will be provided to all attendees.
According to SDGMC, auditions to join the group are competitive as ensemble strives for musical excellence.
"We understand that the idea of an audition can be terrifying, and we do our best to make the audition process as painless as possible," SDGMC said in a statement.
The audition process finishes with candidates singing a song, which is self-selected.
"You should pick a song that you love to sing, anything from an operatic aria or Lady Gaga to Happy Birthday. If you want to be accompanied by the piano, please bring the sheet music in the correct key. It is also perfectly acceptable to sing without accompaniment," SDGMC said.
SDGMC features over 130 singers and strives to create a positive musical experience through exciting performances which engage audiences, build community support and provide a dynamic force for social change. The group was formed after the merger of the San Diego Men's Chorus and the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego in December 2009.
