SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Youth Center's annual "Other Prom" is taking place this Saturday and community members are needed to help sponsor youth to attend.
More than 300 youth from throughout San Diego are expected come together for the special evening, themed "HYC's Black N' White Other Prom 2012," to celebrate the end of the school year at the prom, which provides a space for participants to be themselves and share the evening with other LGBTQ young people.
"The LGBT youth who access The Center’s youth programs want to go to prom, dress up and dance with that someone special," said Christopher Mills, major gifts officer at The Center. "LGBTQ youth should not have to feel isolated or ostracized on prom night. They should be celebrated, supported and embraced. And that’s exactly what happens at The Other Prom."
Organizers say that the event costs nearly $3,000 to produce, and a donation of just $10 will sponsor one youth to attend. For $20, a youth couple will be sponsored, and $100 will cover the cost of a youth table at the Prom.
For each donation made, youth will hang a star at the event with the donor's name on it.
"LGBT youth today still face the same pressures many of us did growing up," Mills said. "The Other Prom is an amazing opportunity for you to give LGBTQ youth a night to feel special, included and valued – because we believe they are!"
