SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride has announced that its 2013 celebration will take place the weekend of July 12-14. The dates of the annual celebration have been moved up one week, departing from the organization's recent history of celebrating pride on the third weekend of July.
The change was made in large part due to the annual Comic Con International, held in San Diego, which has been scheduled for July 18-21, 2013.
Several years ago, Comic Con and San Diego Pride often fell on the same weekend, which was a strain not only on the city's resources and hotel room stock, but forced many community members to have to choose between the pride celebration and Comic Con activities. Comic Con eventually moved its dates to the second weekend in July, with Pride scheduling its parade and festival for the third weekend over the past several years.
To avoid overlap with this year's Comic Con, which falls on the third weekend in July, San Diego Pride organizers decided to move the celebration to the second weekend of July 2013.
San Diego Pride produces the annual LGBT pride parade, festival and celebration and also coordinates a number of advocacy, civil rights, and community service activities year round.
The 2013 event will mark the 39th annual LGBT pride celebration in San Diego.
