It took great courage to stand up against the violence and hate that rocked the Stonewall Inn on the evening of June 28, 1969. Gay men and women, trans folks and drag queens fought back against a police raid on the popular New York bar that night.

It is that same courage and determination from people that has created change in the LGBT community throughout the nearly 50 years since the standoff. That spirit is imbued in the San Diego Spirit of Stonewall Rally and award each year.

San Diego’s first Pride celebration was held in 1975 and the annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally recognizes the men and women and organizations that rise up despite the odds. They challenge repressive forces and take a stand for the entire community no matter what the cost.

These voices and their actions inspire many others who may not be able to stand up for themselves.

Nominations for the San Diego Spirit of Stonewall Award are open until Wednesday, February 28.

You can nominate someone from the community who inspires you and they will be recognized at the San Diego Pride Rally and Parade.
