SDGLN Weekly Wrap: June 2 - June 8, 2018

NEWS

Downtown was the scene of an “active shooter” on Sunday who was reported during the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Sunday afternoon.

The Supreme Court sided with Colorado baker Jack Phillips and in a narrow ruling absolved him of discrimination charges on Monday.

City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez made a special trip to Salt Lake City, Utah last week for two historic reasons. First to present a special bust of Harvey Milk to Mayor Jackie Biskupski. And second to swap Harvey Milk street signs as Salt Lake is the only other American city to name a street after the legendary activist.

It was Election Day in San Diego and that means registered voters got a chance to participate in the Gubernatorial Primary Election..

It’s Pride season and that means sudden parade re-routings, loss of parking and plenty of porta-potties. One restaurant owner went on a homophobic rant after Porta-potties were placed in fron of his business. 

West Hollywood citizens turned out for the City council meeting on Monday night to criticize Mayor John Duran and Councilmember John D’Amcio for presenting adult movie actress and Trump challenger Stormy Daniels the key to their city.  

Many local businesses take advantage of Pride month every year, a time when community and businesses come together to celebrate each other. But this gym in Indianapolis, Indiana, canceled its “Pride workout” because they have a problem with people being proud, “Humility is seeing oneself as they truly are, and as God truly defines them to be.”

The Los Angeles politician who filmed herself berating a transgender woman using the bathroom at Denny’s restaurant won’t be taking a seat at California’s 44th House district this political cycle.

The news was confirmed by CNN, where Bourdain was in the middle of filming an episode of his series “Parts Unknown.” According to the publication, chef and close friend  Eric Ripert found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning apparently having died by suicide.

Isauro Aguirre, 37, and Pearl Fernandez, 34, who killed Fernandez’s eight-year-old because they thought he was gay have been sentenced.

COMMENTARY

I like to say there was something in the air why Pride 2017- here and abroad- was one of the most contentious events in its history. Many, however, in our LGBTQ communities say the tension was always present. 

In the wake of the Supreme Court of the United States' narrow ruling in favor of Colorado baker Jack Phillips, San Diego Pride released the following statement.

CAUSES

This past Sunday over 2,000 bicyclists started peddling on their 545-mile journey from Daly City, California, to Los Angeles for AIDS/LifeCycle, an annual fundraiser that helps HIV/AIDS programs in Los Angeles.

San Diego Pride released their additional entertainment lineup for 2018 featuring live performances from Kim Petras, Paris Sukomi Max, and JoJo.

He’s 11-years-old and he’s as fierce as any cast member in RuPaul’s Werk Room. His name is Desmond Napoles and during DragCon 2018 he fearlessly stood up to protestors standing outside the Los Angeles Convention Center who tried to intimidate attendees with their vehement hatred.
