Lesbian lawmaker elected to California Senate

SACRAMENTO – California Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, a Democrat from Livingston who came out just over a year ago, apparently has won a tightly contested race for the state Senate.

Last week, Galgiani took the lead over Assemblymember Bill Berryhill, a Republican, after trailing since Election Day. She then began growing that lead as provisional ballots were being counted in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties, the heart of the 5th Senate District.

Gay athletes to raise awareness of homophobia in sport

PHILADELPHIA -- Out professional soccer player Joanna Lohman will headlining an event to raise awareness of homophobia and discrimination in sport.

The GO! (Generation Out!) Athletes event will be from 7 to 9 pm EDT on Thursday, Oct. 11, in Bodek Lounge in Houston Hall at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The event will provide opportunities for the scholar athlete community to come together to hear stories by OUT sports role models. GO! Athletes envisions this relaunch as the first of many awareness-building initiatives to occur across the nation.

Tycoon's lesbian daughter laughs at dad's offer, male suitors

The lesbian daughter whose father offered millions to the man who can win her heart has laughed it off.

Hong Kong publicist Gigi Chao, 33, said she thought her dad’s HK$500 million (S$65m, £40m, €50m) offer was "quite entertaining."

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, she said: ‘He [her father Cecil Chao Sze-tsung] has an interesting interpretation of me.

When she was asked if her father was upset at her reported PACS in Paris with her partner of seven years, Sean Eav, she said: ‘He loved the attention.’

Business Insider reports that Cecil Chao Sze-tsung publicly announced the $65 million "reward" after hearing that Gigi Chao had eloped with her long-term female partner to France.

Deeming reports of his daughter's same-sex wedding "false," Chao told the South China Morning Post (via CTV News), "I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted."

17-year-old certified as adult, charged with hate crime against gay Cape Girardeau woman

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The 17-year-old suspect in the July 24 beating of a Cape Girardeau woman will be prosecuted as an adult, a judge ruled Tuesday, and officials wasted no time filing charges that included "hate crime" language because the victim is gay.

In a hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes, Judge Scott Lipke transferred the suspect, Mercedes M. Ayers, from the juvenile system to the adult courts. Ayers, already in ankle shackles, was then taken into custody and transferred to the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
