Ricardo Lara and Equality California announce the introduction of new legislation, SB 840, that would improve the handling of bullying and discrimination incidents in schools.

California governor signs historic bill protecting transgender students

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Gov. Jerry Brown today signed the historic School Success and Opportunity Act into law, ensuring transgender youth have the opportunity to fully participate and succeed in schools across the state.

Assembly Bill 1266, which will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014, was authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and passed the California State Senate and Assembly earlier this summer.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Youth Equality Act (SB 323), designed to bring youth group tax exemptions in line with California’s existing non-discrimination laws, has passed the Senate with a vote of 27-9, making this the first LGBT rights bill to pass with a two-thirds majority in California history.

The bill, authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) and sponsored by Equality California continues to gain momentum and has influenced similar legislation across the country.

Broad coalition opposes Medi-Cal rate cuts

Long Beach community celebrates Ricardo Lara's election to state Senate

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- More than 200 community members joined state Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) on Thursday to celebrate his election to the 33rd Senate District.
