Proceeds to Benefit Six Charity Organizations Dedicated to Eradicating Hunger in San Diego
Hunger at Home, a local non-profit organization, estimates that every day in San Diego, 480,000 people face the threat of hunger and 181,000 of them are children under the age of 12. Their mission is to unite our culturally diverse community in recognition of hunger, homelessness, and malnutrition as an international concern, while creating an immediate focus locally.
Founded last year, Hunger at Home raised $140,000 during its inaugural charity gala in November 2008, enabling the San Diego Food Bank to provide over 420,000 meals. Now an official non-profit, Hunger at Home aims to raise $500,000 with their second annual gala on Saturday, November 21 at the Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla.
Six non-profit and charity organizations that make a daily difference in the lives of needy San Diegans will split this year’s proceeds. They include: Feeding America San Diego, The Monarch School, 211, Embrace, Network for a Healthy California, and the San Diego Rescue Mission.
“This year, we’ve expanded the campaign and the event and brought in partners that we feel are truly dedicated to solving the crisis of hunger in San Diego. We hope to not only raise more money for the cause, but to truly reach the community and get every San Diegan involved in the process of giving,” said Ewell Sterner, Director of Food and Beverage for the Hilton.
The theme for this year’s gala, Through Their Eyes, A Vision of Those In Need, will feature still-shot photos taken by homeless students and edited by Dennison Media Group. These photos will be displayed during the reception portion of the evening and are meant to provide attendees with a sense of what everyday life is like for homeless teens. The photos will also be a part of the evening’s auction.
The black-tie event begins with a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception with over 25 chef stations, wine pairings and a silent auction. A seated dinner will follow with guest speakers, a brief documentary video and a live auction. A special dessert reception created by Chad White, Hunger at Home’s Executive Chef, will be paired with wine cordials and the gala will conclude with dancing and cocktails.
Feeling charitable or just looking for an excuse to wear your best evening attire? Tickets are still available and Hunger at Homes is also still in need of sponsors, auction items, volunteers and donors.
