Equality California stands with legislators to condemn racist, sexist event at UCSD

I just got back from the South steps of the Capitol here in Sacramento where legislators banded together to condemn an incredibly racist and sexist event hosted last weekend at UC San Diego (UCSD).

The so-called “Compton Cook-Out” was organized by members of various Greek fraternal organizations and encouraged participants to mock Black History Month by promoting negative and offensive racial and gender stereotypes.

Legislators were united in calling upon university officials to investigate the organizers of the event and determine what sanctions the fraternities responsible for the event should face. UCSD is purportedly conducting an investigation and expressed disappointment in the actions of their students. One assemblymember remarked that these students have forgotten that it was from the universities where people started organizing for civil rights.

The event was organized by Assistant Speaker pro Tempore Isadore Hall III, D-Compton, and we were joined by Speaker Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, out Speaker-elect John A. Pérez, D–Los Angeles, and members of the Asian Pacific Islander, Black, Latino, LGBT and Women’s Caucuses. It was truly inspiring to stand in solidarity with such an impressive and broad coalition.
