Sex and gender law expert to lecture Thursday at California Western School of Law

SAN DIEGO -- As part of its Spring Diversity Speaker Series, California Western School of Law will host law professor David B. Cruz, a marriage rights advocate and sex/gender law expert.

The event, which will be held at noon on Thursday, March 17, at Cal Western at 350 Cedar St., is open to the public.

Cruz, who is a professor at University of Southern California Gould School of Law, teaches courses in constitutional law, federal courts, and sexual orientation and the law. He specializes in discrimination law and LGBT rights. He is also past chair of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues and co-president of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, and Intersex Law Association.

Cruz was represented in amicus curiae briefs before the Supreme Court of the United States in Lawrence v. Texas, and before the Supreme Court of California in the initial pre-election challenge to Proposition 8.

The school's Diversity Speaker Series was established at California Western in 2009.

The series brings a range of knowledgeable speakers to the campus to help create opportunities for discourse on topics related to diversity in the legal profession and in society. The goal of the series is to support the school's commitment to diversity by providing informed multicultural perspectives on current legal issues.
