The San Diego County Republican Party has orchestrated a smear campaign against our friend Carlos Marquez, Vice-Chair of the City of San Diego’s Redistricting Commission.
First they attempted to discredit his integrity and force his resignation by attacking his ability to serve impartially and objectively. But Carlos firmly stood his ground despite the attacks because he cares deeply about ensuring a fair and transparent redistricting process for ALL San Diegans.
Desperate to remove Carlos from Commission service, the Republican Party has now stooped to a new low by accusing Carlos of lying about his residency in the City of San Diego. They even hired a private investigator to follow Carlos, invading his privacy and snapping photos of him in San Diego and LA. What’s even more reprehensible is the private investigator’s tactics: visiting Carlos and deceiving him into believing he was speaking to a member of the Controller’s office to sign a form acknowledging West Hollywood as ONE of his residences in order to retrieve $200 in unclaimed property from the State of California.
The private investigator is none other than Republican operative Derrick Roach, a former opponent of Mary Salas for Assembly. The 10News story can be found here.
Carlos lives in San Diego and commutes back and forth to/from LA, where he works as the executive director of HONOR Fund. He still lives in San Diego and is still registered to vote in San Diego. This right-wing attack is simply a ploy to remove a qualified and capable public servant from a post of influence because they are intimated by the empowered and diverse communities of San Diego who’ve shown up and spoken to the Commission about the importance of drawing districts representative of all residents, including communities of color and the LGBT community.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
The Republican Party intends to show up at today’s Commission meeting -- Thursday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. on the 12th floor of City Hall (202 C Street) to bully Carlos into resigning and demand that his colleagues vote to remove him from the Commission.
Carlos has served in his role with passion, integrity, and transparency. He needs us now more than ever.
SHOW UP AND CALL OUT THESE PARTISAN ATTACKS FOR WHAT THEY ARE: DIRTY TACTICS EMPLOYED TO UNDULY STALL THE WORK OF THE COMMISSION AND BULLY THE COMMISSIONERS THEMSELVES.
