SAN DIEGO -- Mama's Kitchen's ninth annual Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale raised over $111,000 for the organization over a six-week period in October and November.
More than 4,200 pies were sold with proceeds directly funding more than 37,100 free, hot and nutritious Mama’s Kitchen meals for people leaving with AIDS or cancer.
The fundraiser ran from Oct. 7 to Nov. 24, where hundreds of volunteers took to the streets to sell pies to friends, family and co-workers. Twenty-four of San Diego’s top pastry chefs, caterers and bakeries came forward to bake and donate thousands of pies for the effort. This year’s sponsors included Wells Fargo, The Original Pancake House, Sycuan Casino, Energy Radio 103.7 FM, Gay San Diego, KyXy Radio 96.5 FM, San Diego PIX, San Diego Uptown News, San Diego Magazine and SDGLN.
“We would like to thank all the volunteers, bakers, sponsors and individuals and their team for their dedication, which helped us surpass our goal,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen. “No one should go hungry and due the community’s united efforts will help ensure individuals who are living with AIDS or cancer will have hot meals this holiday season.”

About Mama’s Kitchen
Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide individuals with HIV/AIDS who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. Mama’s Kitchen has served over six million meals since it was founded and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services. Our commitment to our clients remains unchanged. Today, the organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer. Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day, for every day of the year, free of charge, to more than 625 men, women, and children in San Diego County. Learn more and make a donation HERE.
